How much can you really make with passive income apps?

Realistic numbers at every level of effort, from install-and-forget apps to a few hours of surveys a week.

Passive income apps won't replace a paycheck. But stacked sensibly, they can cover a streaming subscription, a tank of gas or a nice dinner every month, plus a few hundred dollars in one-time sign-up bonuses. Here's what's realistic at each level of effort.

Realistic monthly earnings

These ranges are what typical users report. Your results depend on how much you shop, where you live and how much time you put in.

Your setupEffortTypical earnings
Set and forget: two bandwidth apps plus Google Opinion RewardsInstall once$5–$30/mo
Plus shopping: a cash back portal and one or two receipt appsA minute per purchase$20–$80/mo
Plus surveys: one or two survey sites a few times a week2–5 hours a week$50–$150/mo

Survey earnings vary the most. Academic study sites tend to pay better per hour than general survey panels, but they depend on your demographic profile and often have waitlists.

Don't forget one-time bonuses

The biggest single payouts are usually sign-up bonuses, not monthly earnings. A bank account bonus can pay $100 or more for setting up direct deposit, and cash back portals often pay $10 to $50 after your first qualifying purchase. Done once each, these can add a few hundred dollars in your first year.

Order matters. Start with the apps that pay a sign-up bonus for something you'd do anyway, like a purchase you were already planning. That way the first month pays more than the next twelve.

A sample starter stack

  1. Google Opinion Rewards: answer a 20-second survey when it pops up.
  2. A cash back portal extension: click "Activate" before you buy online.
  3. Fetch: scan every receipt, from any store.
  4. Honeygain: install on a home computer and leave it running.

That's about 15 minutes to set up and a few minutes a week to keep going. Build your own on our app list: tick "Add to stack" on each app and the stack bar adds up your typical monthly and yearly earnings.
